The Complete Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Perfect Rug for Every Room

Choosing the right rug size is one of the most impactful decisions you can make when decorating a room — and one of the most commonly botched. A rug that's too small makes furniture look like it's floating on an island; one that's too large overwhelms the space. Get it right, though, and the entire room snaps into focus.

At Willow & Dove, we field rug-sizing questions every single day. So we put together this room-by-room guide to help you choose with confidence — no measuring tape anxiety required.

Why Rug Size Matters More Than You Think

A rug does far more than protect your floors. It anchors your furniture, defines conversation zones, and sets the visual scale of the entire room. Interior designers will tell you that rug selection is one of the first decisions they make — not one of the last — because everything else revolves around it.

The single biggest mistake? Buying a rug that's too small. We've seen it hundreds of times: a beautiful 5×7 rug sitting in the middle of a large living room, dwarfed by the sofa and looking completely lost. When in doubt, size up.

Living Room Rug Sizes

Your living room rug should be large enough that the front legs of all major seating pieces rest on it. This creates a unified, cohesive look that ties the furniture grouping together.

  • Small living room (up to 12×12 ft): A 5×8 or 6×9 rug works well. Place it so the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug.
  • Medium living room (12×16 ft): Go with an 8×10. This is the most popular living room rug size in Canada and gives you plenty of coverage.
  • Large living room (16×20 ft or bigger): A 9×12 or larger is essential. You may even want all furniture legs on the rug for a truly grand feel.

Pro tip: Leave 18 to 24 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall. This frames the rug and prevents the room from looking carpeted.

Dining Room Rug Sizes

Dining room rugs need to be functional above all. Every chair — even when pulled out — must remain on the rug. Nothing kills the mood of a dinner party like chair legs catching on a rug edge.

  • 4-seat table (36×48 in): Minimum 6×9 rug.
  • 6-seat table (36×72 in): An 8×10 rug gives comfortable clearance.
  • 8-seat table (40×96 in): You'll want a 9×12 or larger.

The rule: Add at least 24 inches on all sides of the table. This ensures chairs stay on the rug even when pushed back.

Bedroom Rug Sizes

There are three classic bedroom rug placements, and each calls for a different size:

  1. Under the bed (most popular): Place a large rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends 18–24 inches on each side and at the foot. For a queen bed, choose an 8×10; for a king, a 9×12.
  2. Runners on each side: Two 2.5×8 runners flanking the bed. Perfect for hardwood floors when you want warmth underfoot without covering too much.
  3. At the foot of the bed: A 5×8 placed horizontally at the foot creates a landing pad and adds a design moment.

Hallways and Entryways

Runners are your best friend in narrow spaces. Choose a runner that's at least 6 inches narrower than the hallway on each side. Standard runner widths are 2.5 to 3 feet, and lengths come in 6, 8, 10, and 12 feet.

For entryways, a 3×5 or 4×6 rug creates a welcoming landing zone. In Canadian homes, this is also where your boot mat earns its keep — especially from November through April.

Open-Concept Spaces

Open floor plans are everywhere in Canadian new builds, and they present a unique challenge: you need rugs to define zones without creating visual clutter.

  • Use one rug per functional area (living, dining, reading nook).
  • Keep rug styles complementary — same colour family, different patterns, or vice versa.
  • Maintain consistent spacing between rugs (at least 12–18 inches of bare floor).

Quick-Reference Size Chart

Room Small Medium Large
Living room 5×8 8×10 9×12+
Dining room 6×9 8×10 9×12+
Bedroom (queen) 6×9 8×10 9×12
Bedroom (king) 8×10 9×12 10×14
Entryway 3×5 4×6 5×8

Common Sizing Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Buying before measuring. Tape out the rug dimensions on your floor with painter's tape before you order. Live with it for a day. You'll know instantly if it's right.
  2. Ignoring furniture placement. A rug should relate to your furniture, not just the room. Measure your seating arrangement, not just the floor.
  3. Forgetting the rug pad. A quality pad adds cushion, prevents slipping, and extends the life of your rug. It's not optional — it's essential.
